Don’t Fear the Mid-Tier

Johannesburg | Thought Leadership

During my professional career, I consider myself fortunate to have worked at various professional services firms within the audit/accounting profession. This has added to my experience, knowledge, valuable insights and exposure. In contributing to my experience, I now have the privilege of joining Moore Johannesburg, a mid-tier firm which has contributed to my prior experience. These experiences were both enriching and formative, providing me with a solid foundation in the industry. However, transitioning to a mid-tier firm has offered a fresh perspective, highlighting unique advantages that are often overlooked.

Some notable benefits of mid-tier firms are their entrepreneurial culture, and rapid career growth and opportunities. These organizations often operate with a flatter structure, allowing for quicker decision-making and greater autonomy. This environment encourages innovative thinking and provides employees with the opportunity to see their potential and their impactful contributions. Many individuals may opt to join larger firms, however it can be noted that whilst other bigger firms offer great, structured environments with established processes, the scale of their operations can sometimes make it challenging for individual voices to stand out.

Another advantage is the diverse client exposure available at mid-tier firms. Our teams work with a wide range of clients, from startups to listed companies across various industries. This variety enables the development of a versatile skill set and a broad understanding of different business models.

Career growth at mid-tier firms can also be more accelerated. With fewer hierarchical layers, employees may take on significant responsibilities early in their careers, supported by personalized training and mentorship. This often leads to faster promotions and a more tailored career path.

It’s perceived that mid-tier firms don’t have the same global reach. This simply isn’t true. Moore Global, for instance, has over 34 000 employees across 112 countries with global access to resources and best practices.

This exposure can enhance one’s career with a broader perspective. Similarly, the Big Four have extensive global operations, offering opportunities for international assignments and collaborations, though these may be more competitive due to the larger workforce.

In summary, both mid-tier firms and the Big Four present valuable career opportunities, each with distinct advantages. It’s essential to assess these options based on personal goals and preferences, considering factors like work environment, client interaction, career progression, and global exposure. Embracing the unique offerings of mid-tier firms can lead to a fulfilling career path, just as choosing the Big Four can provide a structured and expansive professional experience.
